Courage to take action.

The Courage to Think Beyond Ourselves: Kimberley Lau’s Call to do what’s right.

Every week I ask my Brave New Girls podcast guest how they define courage. This is how Kimberly Lau, founder of Project Rewear, thinks of it:

"I would say it's being brave enough to question what's broken. In a world built on convenience and overconsumption... Change starts the moment you stop asking what's easy and you start asking what's right."

Kimberly’s words are a powerful call to action. In a world obsessed with speed, convenience, and newness, real courage lies in slowing down, questioning the norm, and choosing differently—even when it’s not the popular choice. For Kimberly, that meant stepping away from a successful career in wealth management to launch a social enterprise that gives secondhand clothing a second life. It meant choosing mission over money, impact over image.

But courage isn’t something we’re born with—it’s something we can grow. It starts as a whisper: Is this right? Is there another way? And with each brave choice we make, that whisper becomes stronger. Kimberly’s story reminds us that courage isn’t always loud—it can be found in quiet persistence, everyday decisions, and meaningful action.

Whether it’s rethinking our shopping habits, raising conscious kids, or standing up for what we believe in, courage invites us to show up as the change we wish to see.

So how do we grow this kind of courage in our lives? How do we stop asking what's easy and start asking what's right?

Here are practical ways to embrace courage & support a healthier, more sustainable world:

10 Actionable Steps to Build Courage:

  1. Choose awareness over autopilot.
Take time to understand the impact of your actions, especially around consumption. Awareness is the first act of courage.

  2. Own your values.
Get clear on what matters to you—whether it’s sustainability, fairness, creativity, or kindness. Let these guide your decisions.

  3. Use your voice.
Talk about the changes you're making. Share your story with friends, family, or online. Visibility helps normalize conscious living.

  4. Rethink your routines.
From your wardrobe to your waste bin, question the habits that no longer align with your values. Start with one small change.

  5. Act with intention.
Before you buy, ask: Do I really need this? Could I borrow, swap, or buy secondhand? Be intentional with your purchases.

  6. Gather your community.
Courage thrives in connection. Host a clothes swap, attend a sustainability event, or follow ethical creators. You’re not alone.

  7. Educate and evolve.
Read books, watch documentaries, and keep learning. Courage grows with knowledge.

  8. Offer what you can.
Whether it’s your time, energy, or expertise, be generous. Support causes, collaborate, or volunteer. Action is a powerful teacher.

  9. Understand your impact.
Track the small ways you’re making a difference—like how Kimberly’s customers see the pounds of textiles they’ve saved from landfill.

  10. Stand for something.
What do you want your children or community to remember you for? Stand up for a world where doing good is part of everyday life.

Courage isn’t about being fearless—it’s about being fiercely aligned with what’s right.
