What is Subconscious Therapy and How Is It Different from Traditional Talk Therapy?

If you’re interested in moving away from limiting beliefs or self-sabotaging behaviours, or getting unstuck from stressful or traumatic events, listen to this week’s Brave New Girls podcast guest Krishna Avalon, licensed acupuncturist, subconscious therapist, PSYCH-K facilitator, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) practitioner. Over the last 24 years, she’s helped more than 32,000 patients and clients move beyond stress and trauma to live with greater peace, purpose, and self-trust.

Krishna explains that subconscious therapy works in the depths of the mind, the part responsible for 95 to 97% of our thoughts, habits, and behaviours.

“When I realised that’s where our patterns live,” she says, “it made sense that we need to work there to move on from triggering or traumatic events. The change can happen quickly, it doesn’t have to take years of talk therapy.”

Through her PSYCH-K training, Krishna learned how to access the subconscious mind simply and safely. Unlike some modalities that only help people detach from stress, PSYCH-K also creates new subconscious programmes that help you move forward. Combined with Internal Family Systems (IFS) , a framework that helps us understand the parts of ourselves that need attention and compassion, her work offers a profound route to healing.

“The parts of ourselves we find uncomfortable aren’t bad,” Krishna explains. “They developed to protect us. When we witness and validate them, they no longer have to react so strongly, they can relax, and we can lead from our calm, loving, courageous self-energy.”

Learning from Krishna’s Journey

Krishna’s courage was forged early. Born into a world where her mother was ostracised by her community, she grew up learning to “fit in where I didn’t belong.” She became an expert giver and a people-pleaser, patterns that many of us recognise. Her path to acupuncture school was her first act of trusting herself completely, a moment she describes as “an absolute yes.” From there, she built a thriving practice and later found herself drawn, divinely guided, she says, into subconscious and internal family systems work.

Krishna’s story is one of deep courage: the courage to be open to change. “People often stay in what’s familiar because it feels safe,” she says. “Even if they’re miserable, it’s what they know. Courage is being open to things being better.”

Brave New Girl- How to Be Fearless.

10 Actionable Steps for a better future.

  1. Acknowledge your parts. Notice your inner critic, worrier, or perfectionist, and thank them for trying to protect you.

  2. Ask what they need. Instead of resisting discomfort, ask those parts of you what they truly want.

  3. Build self-trust. Check in with yourself regularly, even a few minutes of presence can bring calm.

  4. Slow down. Healing happens when we stop rushing and allow ourselves to feel.

  5. Rewrite your story. Use subconscious work or affirmations to replace limiting beliefs with supportive ones.

  6. Practice compassion. Be gentle with the parts of you that feel shame or fear.

  7. Create rituals of rest. Turn off your phone before bed, read a real book, or spend time in nature.

  8. Nourish your body. Eat well, hydrate, and move with intention.

  9. Connect to your higher self. Meditation, breathwork, or prayer help you return to that loving inner energy.

  10. Be open to change. Healing requires courage, the willingness to believe things can be better than before.

Krishna reminds us that transformation doesn’t have to be hard or endless. When we meet ourselves with compassion and curiosity, we make space for real, lasting change.

Subconscious therapy helps rewire the mind for healing and growth by combining neuroscience, compassion, and courage, guiding us to lead our lives from self-energy, not fear.
