Growth from the inside out.

Overcoming Struggles with Daily Rituals: Mellissa Laycy on reprogramming.

My guest on Brave New Girls podcast this week is Mellissa Laycy, a leading voice in holistic health.

For over two decades, Mellissa battled eating disorders, suicidal depression, anxiety, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). When conventional medicine couldn’t offer lasting solutions, she turned to Ayurveda, gut healing, and eventually subconscious reprogramming. Today, her work blends these elements- science and soul- to help others find sustainable freedom.

On the podcast, Mellissa shares that no matter how far she’s come, the journey continues. “Every day,” she says, “I ask myself: where am I not free? What part of me needs love today?”

It’s about tuning into ourselves so we can adjust to our needs as they arise.

She highlights the importance of small, consistent practices that reconnect us to ourselves. Her daily wellbeing routine includes body-based emotional work, movement (often dance), and what she calls “turning toward” the parts of herself that feel hurt, angry, scared, or unseen. Instead of running from pain, she meets it with attention- because “That’s where the growth is.”

Growth doesn’t happen in a single transformation moment- it happens in the choices we make every day. Below are ten actionable steps inspired by Mellissa’s journey to help you create daily momentum for your own growth.

Ten Actionable Steps for Building Wellbeing

  1. Check in with yourself.
Ask each morning: What do I need today? Give your inner world a voice before the outside world takes over.

  2. Stay curious about your triggers.
When something upsets you, pause. Ask: What is this showing me about my inner world?

  3. Let emotions rise- and move.
Suppressed feelings become symptoms. Cry, stretch, dance, journal—give them space to move through you.

  4. Reframe discomfort as a doorway.
When you feel anxious or stuck, try: This is an opportunity to grow. See struggle as signal, not failure.

  5. Nourish your gut.
A healthy gut supports a healthy mind. Add more fibre, fermented foods, and hydration to your routine.

  6. Use body-based grounding.
Techniques like butterfly tapping or barefoot walks reset the nervous system and help regulate emotions.

  7. Talk to the part of you that’s scared.
Use parts work: What do you need right now? Speak to yourself the way you’d comfort a child.

  8. Get into the theta brainwave state.
Deep meditation, breathwork, or even creative movement can unlock subconscious healing.

  9. Celebrate micro-wins.
Growth is rarely dramatic. Did you pause before reacting? Did you feel your feelings? That’s a win.

  10. Choose presence over perfection.
You don’t need to get it right every time. Growth is showing up- even messily- for yourself, again and again.

True growth comes not from fixing yourself but from turning toward yourself with compassion, day after day.
